Lundy Standing Stones: Original Song by Jane Harris

Standing Stones Words by Jane Harris, Vocals by Jane Harris and Elspeth Hannen

Creation of the “Standing Stones” Song

The “Standing Stones” song was born from a walk with Jane Harris of Songways as we walked amongst the standing stones on Lundy Island. During this walk, we read Haikus from a recent Ginko Walk. As we wandered and conversed, we discussed the Haikus and the stones, sparking curiosity about what the stones might have witnessed throughout Lundy’s history.

As we continued exploring other areas of the island, including graffiti traces left by previous visitors, Jane became fascinated by the layers of history revealed to her. This concept of “layer upon layer” became the foundation of the song she later developed. Her response to these experiences and the landscape is captured in the song.

Elspeth Hannen, also on the island, collaborated with Jane, putting the lyrics to music. This original piece of music became a fitting accompaniment for my Lundy standing stone walk video.

I am grateful to Simon Dell for his help in plotting the stones and to the wonderful Lundy visitors who crafted the Haikus at each standing stone. This collaboration shows the magic that happens when creative minds come together.
