Exploring the History of Millcombe Drive’s Gate Posts

Have you ever stopped to consider where the gate posts at the bottom of Millcombe drive have come from? The answer is, that they are thought to be originally the capstone of a chambered tomb. The capstone was cut in two in the late 19 century. This was done to form the gate posts of what was Millcombe Villa. Millcombe Villa was the home of the Heaven family.

You can still find remnants of this chamber on Lundy, but it is a little hidden. The chamber has been filled in quite considerably. This occurred when a bullock drowned in there, after heavy rainfall in the 1890’s.

If you want to discover the burial chamber for yourself. Head west on the track past Benjamin’s chair. When the wall that circles Tent Field turns right, continue very slightly northwest. Hidden among the bracken, you will find a hole and a large stone.

For more information, please see the attached article below. It was written by Myrtle Ternstrom and extracted from the Lundy Field Society.
