World Postcard day -Wendy Mitchell Memorial

To celebrate world postcard day on 1st October, I have placed some specially designed postcards in the Wendy Mitchell letterbox. These postcards have been designed especially for world postcard day by Sharon Read, who also designed and created the current Lundy stamp collection.

Sharon and I thought it was apt to place them in this letterbox, as Wendy was a writer and poet, whom I’m sure wrote postcards from Lundy.

Wendy Mitchell letterbox

Wendy Anne Mitchell, a young ornithologist who died in a tragic accident there in 1952. Wendy tragically fell to her death whilst assisting Peter Davis, bird warden & fiancé to catch & ring guillemots & kittiwakes. She was Twenty two year old and this memorial remains a symbol for the bird watchers of Lundy.

  1. Hello Jane,

Could you please tell me where the memorial stone is?  I have been
staying on Lundy since 2011 but have not seen it, or at least realised
    what it is.

I really enjoy your emails and your obvious appreciation of the
wonderful island.  I`m back in November for a week!

    Many thanks,

    Chris

    • Thanks Chris.
It’s on the west side. Climb over halfway wall at jennys then walk north. You need to go past the really boggy bit and towards three quarter wall. It’s a flat stone on a craggy outcrop. I think the letter box pack has a better clue. It’s not easy to find but I would suggest it’s a little over halfway between the 1/2 and 3/4 walls

      • Hello Jane, you did respond – thank you – but I missed it. I`m back in February so I will follow your directions then. Chris

  2. Wonderful write up Jane, on our last visit tot the island (September) myself and my wife spent a morning sitting at the Wendy Anne Mitchel memorial, when we scrubbed and cleaned the letterbox stamp so it was nice and crisp and fresh for this very occasion. We also got plenty of letterbox cachets on our postcards that will soon be making there way to all the waiting recipients.
